My Week

I am here to give you a synopsis of our last few days. Do you know how it is when you turn a fan on near a bunch of papers and they all start blowing around? It has been similar to that, in a way. The volleyball tournament was crazy because it was every night for 4 nights. With Garth coaching and reffing-the nights were a blur. Then we had Sunday morning church where Garth and I were teaching the kids and Monday Cale woke up with a fever. He just wants Mommy when he is sick. We had a pembantu not show up on Tuesday, 5 or 6 runs to the market and the store and a half-day of school on Wednesday, the dorm kids are all getting ready for Sadie Hawkins on Saturday & needing things for their costumes. Then this morning I got a phone call at 6:45 a.m. that we are not going to have any house help on Saturday. Now Saturday here is one of our biggest work days because we cook the Saturday meal and then help prepare the Sunday meal and get all that laundry done because they don’t come in on Sunday. So when I heard that they wouldn’t be in, I knew that we would be busy today cooking the meals for today and Saturday and Sunday. Plus, I just happen to be having a party here on Saturday night so I had all sorts of stuff to make for that as well. But we worked together and got a lot of it done by 3pm. I just have a few more things to do tonight and tomorrow. Now, I need to figure out a way to fit it all in the fridge. I had to mark everything with signs saying “Don’t Eat” otherwise the dorm kids will eat it before I even get to serve it. In between all this is taking care of Cale who still has his fever. Please pray for him to start feeling better. He is a bit of a booger right now because he feels lousy.

Wednesday though we were able to do something special. The Olver’s dog was having puppies and we went over to see them being born. She had 5 little puppies total, and we were able to be there for part of it. What a treat for all of us. And yesterday was also something special. Wyatt and I went to a local orphanage and helped teach the kids English. I worked with 10 Jr. High girls and Wyatt worked with a lot of little kids playing “Red Light, Green Light” and teaching them the Alphabet song…It was good to do something together like that. We will go back once a week and work with the same kids. Tonight is the Friday night game. Volleyball is over so we are starting soccer. There are 4 HIS teams that play against 4 different Indonesian teams. The meal tonight is Hot Dogs (actual American ones). It is yummy!

I need to go. Love to all-

Rachel

My Weekend

We had so much fun this weekend watching That Darn Cat. Remember that movie? It is great watching those oldie but goodies. Even Cale paid attention the whole way through.
This week we have a half-day on Wednesday and then there is Sadie Hawkins on Saturday. The high schoolers are all excited about that. They dress up as characters with their date and do an excellent job of being creative. I will make sure to take pictures. Every other Wednesday if a half-day. Wouldn’t that be nice? Oh, you only have to work half a day today-take the other half off…
Wyatt went to a birthday party at the pool on Saturday. While the boys were playing chicken fights, Wyatt’s face hit another kids head and one of his teeth was knocked out. It was a premolar on the side and I am hoping that it was a baby tooth. A dentist here said it was, but I wasn’t sure. Any dentists out there know if it is ok to lose a premolar?
Our church in Wisconsin had its Missions conference this weekend, and showed our video. The room was packed and people had to stand in the back. COOL! Did any of you go? My Mom sent me pictures of the table they set up with information on how we are doing and ways to contact us. Everything looked real nice. Thank you to Mom and Carlena for helping make all of that possible.
The school bell is about to ring for lunch so I need to cut this short. It is an actual bell, like in Little House on the Prairie. Each day someone rings it for the start and end of school, the start and end of recess and for lunch. It is a great way to keep track of what time it is.
Love you
Rachel

Cale's new friend Masron
Look at this beautiful baby!

What was that noise?

Cale is sitting here watching Corduroy. What a sweet movie. I just got done making two cakes, 2 pans of homemade granola and 2 jars of peanut butter. It feels good to sit down.
This morning Cale and I walked down to Hypermarket to get some peppers for our chicken fajitas. It is good for us to take that walk every so often because it gives us a chance to talk to other kids and Moms. There are so many friendly people on our street, and the kids are so cute. Cale just loves them. The kids tend to be shy and cautious around us, but Cale just goes right over and touches their face or hugs them. It is great.
I will show you the pictures.
We have had the volleyball tournament here so we have had games Wed night, Thurs night, and now tonight. Then tomorrow is the finals. The HIS teams are not doing well. Garth has been reffing for the games he is not coaching so the nights have been a bit crazy.
I am going to start helping a lady named Miss Jones. She is going to be teaching the younger kids ballet. Sophie and Emma are so excited. As you can imagine. So Mondays after school I told Miss Jones I would help her keep the kids under control. And on Thursdays Wyatt and I are going to go with some other kids to the orphanage and help teach the little kids English. They are being taught it in school but need help with regular conversation words. I wanted something I can do with Wyatt. He has so much freedom here, that I feel like he is slipping away. He comes home from school, grabs a snack and runs off to play until dinner. We do have our family time every night together which is wonderful. But then he will often go to the gym or play computer games with the other kids until bed. So this will be just what we need together. Sophie was so funny the other night during prayer. This is what she said,” Jesus, thank you that in Genesis 1:1 God created the heavens and the earth and thank you that you gave Noah direction and thank you that you gave us Your everlasting covenant.” Wyatt prayed, “Jesus, thank you for my esophagus.”
I do not know if I mentioned it, but our cat is going to have kittens. It shouldn’t be long now. The kids are really excited about this bit of news. They are praying that Gypsy has 4 kittens so they can each have one. I am hoping that Garth lets us keep them but I haven’t asked yet. Two nights ago we had a crazy loud storm. When that happens it always wakes me up. We have a tin roof and it always sounds like a steel drum in here. Anyways, our cat was restless. I am not sure if it was because of the storm or if she was chasing a cecuk. But she hopped up on the counter in the kitchen at 1 am and proceeded to knock off our big fryer onto the ground. It was full of oil and had a nice glass lid. I jumped out of bed at the noise and ran into the rooms of our apartment to check on all of our kids, but didn’t notice anything. However, in the morning, I quickly realized what that noise was I heard. What a mess! Unbelievable. She was so covered in oil. Garth and I have washed her 2 times but she still has a shiny coat. Boy, was the kitchen tile slippery for awhile!
Time to go watch the games.
Love Rachel

Bad day

Ever had a bad day? I mean a really, BAD day? I have had multitudes of them. But none as bad as this dude from the Bible-Jeremiah. I was reading about him last night in Jeremiah 20:14. Listen to what he says: “Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my Mother bore me not be blessed! Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, who made him very glad by saying, “A child is born to you-a son!” May that man be like the towns the Lord overthrew without pity. May he hear wailing in the morning, a battle cry at noon. For he did not kill me in the womb, with my Mother as my grave, her womb enlarged forever. Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?”
Doesn’t that sound like he is in the depths of despair? (Ha ha-anyone remember that from Princess Bride?) Yet the verse right before says, “Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.” Ugh! We can be so wishy- washy sometimes. The world can look so grim and dark one day and then things turn up, the sun comes out and things are ok again.
I have been telling myself lately to wake up happy. Even when I have a crappy night sleep, the mosque call to prayer is loud outside my window, the cat is meowing right by my head, and Cale is hungry and wants breakfast. Because I realize, more now than before, that I have a choice. Every new day is an opportunity for me to participate, to be alive-or to make excuses and be full of regrets. I don’t want to keep waiting to be the person I want to be-I want to make it happen.
Since we are talking about Princess Bride-remember this part? “Do you have the wing?” or how about this, “No more rhymes now I mean it? Anybody got a peanut?” My sister Carlena and I and Kerrie used to quote that movie. Ha ha-good times.
Good times and great moments don’t have to be these colossal, extravagant, expensive events. Joys come from the little things that you are part of-completely in the moment. Don’t wait for other people to change-change yourself. Don’t wait for other people to make things right with you-you make the first move. Don’t look for ways to get people to praise you-find ways to praise them. Don’t make excuses, just don’t. All that brings is regrets.
One more Princess Bride line and then I must go-“ Any one for a nice BMT sandwich, you know when the mutton is nice and perky…oooh, I love that?”
Gotta go.
Love you-Rachel

Wyatt and Sophie

Not much-just a bit of news

I just made peanut butter chocolate fudge brownies. There are two plates of them on the counter but in 20 minutes when the kids come home from school there will just be 2 empty plates on the counter. The kids are like vacuum cleaners.
The dorm this year is better than last year. The kids are more respectful for the most part. There are some situations and dorm kids that are more challenging but we will get through it. We are working on developing good relationships. One girl told us that she already has a family, and doesn’t need us. She said she looks at the hostel more like a hotel-just a place to eat and sleep. So that was like a slap in the face. Please pray that we will know how to deal with her. When to be gentle and when to be strong. She is the one of the most difficult ones here and she likes being that way. She will come right out and ignore us and we tried talking to her about it last week, and she said, ”If I don’t feel like talking I won’t.” She is 16 and needs to realize that there are things you have to do even if you don’t want to.
Our kids are doing fine. Happy and healthy. Sophie lost her first tooth-twice. It fell out of her mouth and as she ran up from the playground, she lost it again-she dropped it in the grass. She looked and looked but never found it. Sophie and Wyatt did a show with their classes in front of the whole school. They did great. Wyatt had a lot to say and there were quite a few songs they memorized. Sophie dressed up like a puppy for one part and looked so cute. I will post pictures on the blog for you.
I was looking for ways to get to know other missionary women here. I am in an awkward spot. The teachers all get together for things and the pilot’s wives, and other groups but I am on the outside of all of those groups and don’t belong to them. So I volunteered to be on the committee to plan the Thanksgiving here. I think that will be something I will enjoy, as long as I don’t get frustrated at all the things we can’t get. I have other ideas too of things I can do. I might have a ladies retreat sometime in the next few months.
Tonight is the last boys volleyball game. Next week starts the volleyball tournament. It would be nice if they won tonight.
Anyways I need to go. The school bell should be ringing anytime now.
Rachel
Oh, our church is having their Missions Conference Oct.17-19 and we made a video for one of their seminars. If anyone is interested in coming please do. It will be very informative.

October 8, 2008 - Making Things Last

I was thinking about my Grandma and Grandpa today. You know, a big part of their life was spent trying to make things last. They always had a vinyl cover to protect the couch and a clear, runner at the doors to protect the carpeting. My Grandma would reuse whatever she could: tea bags, McDonald’s containers etc. They always took their used car in to get it serviced when it was time. They were happy with hand-me-down clothing and found other ways to make their money last. When things were on sale they would stock up, if bananas were cheaper at Pick-N-Save, that is where they would buy them. They always wanted family time to last as well. You could never go over without both of them inviting you to sit and eat something, especially an oatmeal cookie, or a glass of juice. Every letter and picture and story would last for weeks. They would take them everywhere they went to share with all of their friends and even some strangers. They even tried to make their bodies last by walking everyday and going in for check-ups and eating just what they should, especially veggies from the garden.
But, you know-no amount of careful forethought can give you a guarantee. Health can still fail, kids can spill or forget to walk on the mats, the economy can crash, family can move away, cars can break down and on and on.
You know, if you go over to Cherry Street you will see that their house is still there, the car and the couch and the carpet are all still there. But if you were to ask my Grandparents they would tell you that those things are not what really matter. The way they lived their life, what they left behind, and most importantly, who they believed in-that is what is important. The one guarantee they had is from the Bible-they knew from verses like John 3:16 that God’s promise was true “-…whosoever believeth in Him (God) will not perish, but have ever lasting life.” They are not surprised that they are in Heaven. And neither are we. Contrary to what many religious people think, there is only one way to Heaven and that is through believing in God. And believing in God is so much more than just a quick ride “to the good place.” God wants to have a relationship with us and wants to be a part of our lives-not a bossy, overbearing man with a club over our head, but a loving Father who is there to help us, correct us, love us and guide us. Please think about this. If you don’t know what I mean, ask someone you know that would. Or read your Bible if you have one-start in John. Or get a Bible if you don’t have one. Whatever you do, don’t think that the good way you live your life is enough. It is not about being good enough because there is always going to be someone “more good” than you. And what if your good is not enough? You have no guarantee that you will live tomorrow, or next week, or next month. As foreboding as that may sound, it is absolutely true-and you don’t want to be too late. Think about this, and then do something about it. If you don’t know anyone to talk to about this, email me. I would love to talk to you.
Every day when I wipe off the vinyl cover we have over our dinner table, I think about my Grandparents and all the truths they taught me. I know them to be true because they are from God’s Word. Figure out today what you believe and check it by the Bible. It is only worth believing in if it is true. Otherwise, what good is it?
Love you
Rachel

Moldy cheese

Sophie is so excited. She has her first loose tooth! Yes, she is 6, but she hasn't lost a tooth yet. I do hear her declare every day that, "This is the day!" However, it is still hanging on. She informed me that it would come out easier if she ate an apple, or some popcorn, or maybe some moldy cheese. Not sure how she got the notion of moldy cheese in her head, and I don't have any, so she will have to stick with apples and popcorn.
I saw some funny T-shirts today and I thought instead of just telling you I would take a picture. So I have them posted on the blog.
Sophie mentioned to me tonight that it was ok for her to go to bed with filthy feet, because she was getting to be Indonesian now. I said, "You still have an American Mom that does not want those feet in a nice, clean bed! Go! Wash."
We are without our main cook, Poppi, today and tomorrow. She had some family thing she needed to go to. And we are still having problems with our other kitchen helper, Yuli. She asked yesterday if she could borrow more money from us...long story...and she was being a grump about the girl we got to work with her while Poppi was gone. Yuli said if it didn't go well with this girl that she was going to leave. She is such a hot head. We have had her fighting with other helpers in our kitchen before. She doesn't know how to control herself. I am not sure if she is a Christian or not, so I am trying to treat her with love no matter how bad of a mood she has been in. And I will tell you, she has been in a bad mood for about a month or two so I am getting tired of it. We have had a lady come in a couple of times to translate for us with Yuli and we ask if she is unhappy, if there is anything wrong, or anything she wants to talk to us about and she keeps telling us no, but this translator thinks that Yuli might leave us soon. That would not be good, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
Hope you are well and healthy-don't go eating any moldy cheese. My Dad loves blue cheese. He can eat it straight out of the package. Yikes!
Love,
Rachel

Don't touch the peppers!

See those nice red peppers? Cale was playing with
them while I was buying stuff. Then he
touched his face and was a very uncomfortable
boy!
Look at what Wyatt learned how to do this week!
He can drive Garth's Megapro all by himself!

How many ten year olds get to do this?

He is in "hog heaven."

Watch for my kite

Our Holiday (Idul Fitri) is officially over. We had so much fun as a family. We flew kites, did face painting, haircuts, taught the kids how to play SPOONS, splashed outside in the tubs, had friends over and played water balloon volleyball, made pizza, played in the playground, ping pong, exercised, watch movies and popped popcorn, read books…fun, fun, fun!
We have some of the dorm kids now but not all as a few of them flew to Wamena to see the parents and won’t be back until Monday.
Yesterday when we were out flying our kite it was amazingly high and Garth wanted to go back to the hostel on his motorcycle to get the video camera. Well, in the few minutes he was gone the kite got even higher and then a big gust of wind came and knocked the kite out of Wyatt’s hand. We ran after the spool and got it, but unfortunately the end of the string was not attached to the spool so the kite took off on its own. We watched it for a long time-it went right over a mountain , and then a big, puffy cloud, and Sophie said, “Maybe it will go all the way to our country!” So keep a look out for a large, orange Chinese looking kite with yellow ribbons. Let me know if you get it. Ha ha.
For the Friday Night Game tomorrow, the teams are playing the parents and coaches. So that means that Garth is the coach for the Girls A team while the real coaches play against them, then he is coaching the boys B team, referee for the Girls B team, and then playing in the boys A team game. Busy night for that man. Should be fun to watch.
We still don’t have internet-however, we can go up to the computer lab and send this later tonight or tomorrow. In case we lose all internet, I need to wish my awesome, terrific, cute, funny, crazy, gregarious, outgoing, talented, and very kind Mother a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! It will be her birthday on October 4-she will be plentynine. Mom, you are the best and I love you truly. Watch in the mail or at your front door. You have a surprise coming today or tomorrow from us.
Take care everyone.
Love you all-
Rachel
